A covers record never sounded like this before. Everyone's favorite faux-Appalachian yarn spinner, Will Oldham, follows up (with another slight name adjustment) his haunting, funny, and charming Ease Down The Road with More Revery, an EP filled with love songs. Though each of the songs has its own charm, nothing is more stunning than Oldham's take on PJ Harvey's "Sweeter Than Anything," where he not only rocks out over a repeated xylophone phrase and electric guitar hook, but actually sings beyond his normal monotone range.

In a different vein, the guitar-rock-god intro to the John Holt's "Strange Things" gives way to a echoey organ and vocal arrangement that is a fine example of tension and release. Oldham's take on Tim McGraw's "Just To See You Smile" is a beautiful ditty stripped of over-production and infused with a straightforward tenderness that Oldham often excludes from his own songwriting. Dynamic and concise, More Revery reveals a straightforward and sincere Will Oldham. What will he do next?
