So it's really no surprise that at some point in time he would decide to cut an album of his favorite tunes as a form of thank you to the original artists and an introduction of these artists to his fans. Kojak Variety doesn't attempt to make a big philosophical statement.
Instead it's just great, great fun.
The album kicks off with a Screaming Jay Hawkins' b-side, "Strange." Costello tries to sing the first line but starts laughing and has to start over again. The audience now knows what to expect.
Every song is infused with an energy that carries the song along, grabbing the listener by the ear and taking them on a great trip. This is due in no small part to the extraordinary group of musicians Costello has backing him: James Burton, Marc Ribot, Jim Keltner, Jerry Scheff, Larry Knetchel and Pete Thomas. All these guys know exactly what they're doing and there are some spectacular performances on this album.
The best songs on the album, however, are the ballads "Remove This Doubt," "I Threw It All Away," and "I've Been Wrong Before." Even though he may be better known for his rockers, Costello proves he's just as at home -- maybe even more so -- doing the slow, sad numbers. Don't expect any great insights on this album.
If you listen to this album with great expectations, they're guaranteed not to be met. But if you want to have some fun and hear some great songs, then Kojak Variety is just what you need.
