Dwight Yoakam
Last Chance For A Thousand Years
Reprise, 1999
RiYL: The Bakersfield sound |
There isn't a single selection from Yoakam's last album, A Long Way Home, nor the album previous to that, Under the Covers. Doesn't that seem just a bit odd? There are also no selections from Dwight Live. Though maybe that's a little more understandable because it's a live album.
Admittedly the three albums which make up the majority of this CD, If There Was a Way, This Time, and Gone, are Yoakam's best, but there are great songs on the other albums as well. For instance, "Same Fool," "Things Change," and "These Arms" from A Long Way Home are all worthy of inclusion, yet who knows why they weren't.
The songs included here are fantastic, though. A good introduction to the Bakersfield sound Yoakam has honed to perfection over the last decade.
There are also three new tunes available here for the first time. The first two, "Thinking About Leaving" and "I'll Go Back To Her" are pretty standard Yoakam fare, but the best part about this selection is Yoakam's cover of the Queen classic "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Where the original may have leaned a little over to the rockabilly side, Yoakam has turned it into a rockin' up-beat country number that'll get anyone's toes tapping.
Begrudgingly I will admit that this is a pretty decent overview of Yoakam's '90s oeuvre. But if you like this album, do yourself a favor and give a listen to the albums not included on this collection.
Even if Dwight doesn't think so, they're great too.
