PaloAlto has created one of the best rock albums in years. From the churning riff of opening song "Depression Age" to the swirling space-rock feel of closer "Made of Stone," the L.A. band creates a groove on its debut that pairs angst with strong musicianship and songwriting reminiscent of Radiohead, Catherine Wheel and '80s U2.

The album is front-loaded, starting with high-energy rock tunes before transitioning into a more sensual and textured mix of songs later in the record that employ subtle hooks and lush elegant melodies. Borrowing from the Smashing Pumpkins' style of soothing rests between power-chord assaults, the songs swing from understated, quiet vocals to a full roar and back with equal intensity.

Lead singer James Grundler's vocals display a certain passion that holds the songs together and keeps the listener in tow. Grundler takes over in songs like "Throw the Brick," which slowly builds to its zenith while the vocals connect the driving beat and swirling guitars.

Guided by legendary helmsman Rick Rubin (Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys), the album is impeccably produced. Rubin highlights the band's best qualities: strong vocals, dynamic guitar work, and driving beats, without losing the emotional core of the songs or making the sound too slick. Rubin has mastered the idea that less is more, and that doctrine allows PaloAlto's songs to soar.
