Come In And Burn

Henry Rollins spent 1995-1997 starring in movies, writing books and producing albums. But the '90s renaissance man didn't release any music with his group the Rollins Band throughout that time.

Unexpectedly, the band's return, Come In And Burn is the best Rollins Band album yet. Rollins' emphasis on and love of jazz has always been part of the group's music, but this record fully realizes what the frontman has previously tried to produce.

"The End of Something" and "All I Want" both have elements of jazz and metallized punk, which is no small feat amid today's derivative hard-rockers. The album opens with a spacey intro to "Shame" that develops into the half- spoken, half-sung vocalization that is Rollins' signature. While Rollins hasn't changed his singing style much, his band seems to be writing and performing at a higher level than was displayed on 1994's Weight.

Come In And Burn is a surprising work from a band that had been on a nosedive toward a mediocre existence.
