The Biz
Thrill Jockey, 1995
RiYL: Luna, Tortoise, Velvet Underground, Jim O'Rourke
Gorgeous pop, spun from the finest musical silk. Imagine a small, private cruise ship docking at an island paradise populated by clear-eyed musicians in orange-tinted sunglasses sipping on vodka Gimlets through curly straws.

You've come close to approximating the feel of Sam Prekop and company's third and arguably best full-length record.

The Biz is filled to the brim with joyous, fluttering anti-ballads and head-bobbing forays into sweet, jangly rock. Prekop's aloof falsetto smooths out all the rough edges, while he and Archer Prewitt's tingly guitar work keeps songs like "Station In The Valley" floating above the clouds. There's even a Tortoise-y moment on "For Minor Sky," with drummer John McEntire finessing the vibes.

The Sea & Cake will keep you happy, if not in love.
