A reissue of a classic album, 1969's Dusty In Memphis took R&B instrumentation and contemporary pop and squashed them together with fine results.

This record let British-born Springfield get soulful and gritty with the hit "Son Of A Preacher Man." Other songs, penned by Carole King ("Don't Forget About Me," "No Easy Way Down"), Burt Bacharach, ("In The Land Of Make Believe") and Randy Newman ("I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore"), never broke commercially.

No matter. Dusty In Memphis is a masterpiece. Plus, the reissue's pamphlet includes late 1960s pictures of Ms. Springfield in all her fabulous, big-hair glory.
