The Wee Turtles
This Land Is Your Land
Pitch-A-Tent, 2000
RiYL: Guided By Voices, Of Montreal
The Wee Turtles play friendly, tight garage pop in the vein of Guided By Voices or some of the more sunny members of the Elephant Six Collective. This Land Is Your Land is best suited to playing in the summer, driving around your college town with the windows rolled down.

The music doesn't scream originality, but it's a pleasant, smile-inducing listen. The band's charisma is evident in humorous numbers like "Shin Splints (The Cross Country Song" and "Playtime At Castle Greyskull."

The Wee Turtles' treble-heavy guitar lines and happy vocal harmonies don't stray much from track to track, but the band's determination is evident, and makes for a fun experience. It sounds like these Turtles would be a great band to see live, as their energy is the most impressive element audible on the disc.

TROY CARPENTER | Troy Carpenter founded NATN from a Chicago apartment during the ambitious winter of 1998 with co-conspirators Ben French and Jonathan Cohen. After a five-year stint in New York, he and wife Lourdes have recently relocated to Indianapolis, where he spends days listening to music and nights in the kitchen at Elements restaurant. Musical heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Super Furry Animals. What else makes life worth living: Sushi, Phucty, runs in the park, and the Atlanta Braves.
