The least enthralling of the Mysteries' releases, Anonymous Tip is the second of two indie EPs bridging the gap between the band's great first and second albums.

The best tune of the bunch is the first, "I Need To Know Where I Stand," in which Jake Smith's catchy melody is elegantly bared by guest Lisa Germano's sparse orchestral instrumentation. The rest of the songs here are passable Midwestern rock (plus a Jam cover), but don't quite live up to the quality of the Mysteries' other recordings.

"Let It Slip" was reprised for 1998's Come Clean.

TROY CARPENTER | Troy Carpenter founded NATN from a Chicago apartment during the ambitious winter of 1998 with co-conspirators Ben French and Jonathan Cohen. After a five-year stint in New York, he and wife Lourdes have recently relocated to Indianapolis, where he spends days listening to music and nights in the kitchen at Elements restaurant.
