The result is an accomplished, intelligent and well-conceived work of post-punk rock mastery which expands on the work of the members' former bands, but remains innovative and original. The haunting lyrics, aching vocals and aggressive guitar work of Butler synthesize with Ackerman's spastic and powerful drumming to form innovative rock dynamics. This band hits on so many levels that upon first listen, In Passing is a bit overwhelming. But I have yet to be disappointed with the understanding and appreciation gained from each successive listen.
The two most instantly likable tracks, "South for the Summer" and "Rumors About Lightning," combine the cadence and structure sensibilities of Giant's Chair with the craft and passion of Boy's Life. They really fucking rock.
The album is consistent the whole way through, there are absolutely no throwaways. Having recently relocated to Washington, D.C., the band shows some of its new scene's influence creeping in, particularly the hardcore stylings of label mates Kerosene 454.
The move to D.C. comes as a bit of a surprise, after the members had entrenched themselves in the Kansas City scene. But as evidenced by their incredible live shows in the D.C. area and the strength of In Passing, these guys really know what they're doing.
