The Unstable Molecule
Thrill Jockey, 1997
RiYL: Tortoise, Directions In Music, Chicago Underground Orchestra |
The kissin' cousin of Chicago's own favorite ambient soundscape sons Tortoise, Isotope includes multi-instrumentalists Jeff Parker, Dan Bitney and John Herndon among their six-player lineup along with members of the Chicago Underground Orchestra.
Methodical but loose, the jazzy escapades on The Unstable Molecule mix up the best parts of brass and bass funk with weepy after-hours instrumental crooning. The track "La Jetee" sounds like 4:45 a.m. on the last day of vacation, while "Phonometrics" boogies and wiggles like a possessed groove.
