Could You Please And Thank You
Time Bomb, 2000
RiYL: Squirrel Bait, Shawn M
All good punks grow up someday, and Peter Searcy's music has grown plenty since his days of growling punk anthems with seminal teenage Louisville band Squirrel Bait. The guitarist in that band was none other than David Grubbs, who has completely reversed his musical ideology since those days to become a hallmark of the American indie/avant-garde music scene with Gastr Del Sol and his own solo projects.

Searcy has gradually been toning things down since the mid-80's, first with Big Wheel and later with Starbilly. And on Could You Please And Thank You, his first solo album, Searcy has settled uneasily into radio-friendly rock with buffed pop hooks. "Hateful" actually garnered airplay on "Dawson's Creek," and the emotive power ballad "Nothing" could easily be Shawn Mullins'.

A few tracks, such as opener "Furniture," benefit from a more aggressive, Sugar-ish sound, but overall this album doesn't rise above the level of adult-contemporary's rank and file.
