Everyone But You
Intelligent, 2001
RiYL: Radiohead, Fountains of Wayne, Barenaked Ladies |
The album hits the ground running with "Where Have All the Heroes Gone?" The song kicks off the record with a pulsing drum beat that propels it straight into an irresistible pop hook. But the band changes gears early, following up the punk assault with "Falling Flat," a more reserved Boston pop song with all the staples of alt-pop, including loose harmonies that stretch from verse to chorus.
Calendar Girl really hits its stride with "Song For A Blonde Girl." The slower tempo of the song well supports its soul-searching lyrics and strained vocals. When Calendar Girl taps into their inner Thom Yorke, they hit home runs. But, unlike Yorke's band, Calendar Girl also has a quirky fun side.
Songs like "Pageboy" wouldn't seem out of place on a Barenaked Ladies or Fountains of Wayne Record, and the punk-driven "Bad Horse," which repeats the line "Well, he is a bad horse" over and over, shows that the band knows how to express its sense of humor.
This eclectic musical approach is refreshing, and it keeps the listener interested. Calendar Girl is a strong band with a strong record that bodes well for the young group's future.
