Measure: 2003
The Year In Music

![]() |
We thank you for coming back to the site again. Sorry we've been slacking off on updating for the last few months. As you may or may not already know, our brain trust has been partly preoccupied with the creation of a side project called Measure. It's a print publication that basically tells the year in music using articles from print magazines and web sites like NATN.
Among this issue's many highlights are the following:
- Features and Interviews on the year’s most compelling artists, including Black Dice, Cat Power, Guided By Voices, Prefuse 73, the Wrens, and Wire
- An extensive Reviews Section with more than 100 capsule reviews, as well as multi-page specials on the year’s most revered albums, such as Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People, Manitoba’s Up in Flames, Sufjan Stevens’ Michigan, and the Shins’ Chutes Too Narrow
-Other hard-to-classify, yet highly enjoyable rock reading, like “Rock Sniglets” from Chunklet Magazine, and the “Ween Tour Diary,” written by the one and only Dean Ween.
If you're interested in getting a copy, they're available online at Insound. They are also on sale at Tower and smaller shops like Other Music (NYC), Reckless Records (Chicago), Amoeba (SF), and Sonic Boom (Seattle).
I'd also like to say that the idea for Measure stemmed from my work on Nude As The News. Even if it's irregular (and you know it is!), we have great community that make it a real source of pride for all of us. New writers and readers appear constantly, as new good music somehow continues to justify this site's existence.
I basically wanted Measure to help nurture that same musical zeal I see through NATN's small collective of outspoken enthusiasts. I hoped that by connecting a number of NATN-minded publications to one another for solidarity's sake we might be able to bring some new blood, show folks there are other magazines to buy, other sites to visit, and most importantly, other bands to discuss.
If you do get a chance to pick up a copy, please email us and tell us what you think. We intend to do it again next year and we'd love to hear your thoughts.
Best,
Ben
