Beulah

Album reviews

The Coast Is Never Clear
Velocette (2001)
While I still contend that their poorly produced beautiful disaster of a debut, Handsome Western States will always be their magnum opus, this newest one finds the boys of Beulah becoming men.

When Your Heartstrings Break
Sugar Free (1999)
If the ultimate function of the record reviewer is to give a music consumer a clear idea, by describing a release's general sound and background and comparing it to other releases, of whether it is worth he the consumer's music dollar, then I can get this review done in record time.

Handsome Western States
Elephant 6 (1997)
Handsome Western States is one of my favorite guilty pleasures -- an album terribly recorded, inconsistently performed, and with some lyrics that make Promise Ring singer Davey von Bohlen look like the finest logician of our times.

Bowery Ballroom, New York
When I was 16, I started making a mental list of all the bands I wanted to see play live. And back in the day, when I set my mind to it, I was pretty effective at achieving mental check marks.

For weeks, I'd been telling everyone who'd listen that Beulah, Track Star, and Dealership were going to provide the biggest highlight of the entire Noise Pop festival. Now that the show has happened and I was there in the front row, I can safely say that it feels so good to be so right.
