Some of the most vital listening experiences of our lives came during the 1990s, as we made our way through school and into the working world of our mid-Twenties. Nude as the News was created to pay tribute to the music which has influenced and inspired us through this past decade. We feel compelled to look back on those records which have defined our experiences in this period. But we aren't interested in boring ourselves (or you) with yet another conversation about the "best" or "most essential" albums of the '90s. Instead, we are focusing on one basic but truly important element of the music-listening experience. A "compelling" album, as American Heritage Dictionary sees it, is a work that urgently requires attention. Throughout the last two months of 1999, we are dissecting, discussing and delivering the 100 most compelling albums of the decade. NATN has been debating, exploring, and re-writing the still blurry meaning of the word "compelling." It is still impossible to give you our exact definition or offer the exact criteria for our list. But we can tell you a few important decisions we've made regarding what to include & what to leave off. We've decided to favor unpopular albums over popular albums. Why? Maybe because we wanted to give props to some of the decade's lesser-known, but still worthy, albums. In other cases, we wanted to talk about the albums we found personally compelling. And often, our personal connection to many albums have been obliterated by their enormous impact. No, we're not music snobs. We love Nevermind and Odelay as much as the next guy. And there are plenty of multi-platinum records on this list. But we also look at this list as a way to educate as well as celebrate. We're hoping we've included both something you already love dearly and a hidden treasure that you're about to discover.
